2030 is when there will be no new car sales for petrol and diesel engines. The government has brought this forward from 2035.
You will still be able to purchase used vehicles, so for those old school petrol heads you are safe for now. Can you imagine the car world in 40 years time? It is making Back to the future movie very realistic. One day we may say, "where we're going, we don't need roads".
Is the UK ready?
Statistics show that electric vehicle buying habits are increasing. In fact in 2019 one in every 6 vehicles purchased was an electric car. The main purpose for the ban is to ensure a zero carbon policy by 2050. About a third of CO2 emissions in the UK come from transport. So the ban on conventional car sales will certainly help move the UK towards the net-zero target the government announced in 2019.
but I love my car
You will still be able to drive your petrol or diesel after the ban. This is for new vehicles only.
Charging Currently there are 11,000 places in the UK where you can charge your vehicle. It has been estimated the UK needs to have 25 million charging points for electric vehicles Questions have been raised on how will this work? Will the roads need to be dug up for cabling? Will drivers have to share chargers?
